Kitui Sanitary towel distribution 22nd October 2015
Quoting Richard Kimani, one of the volunteers in our October 2015 Pads distribution in Kitui West,
‘Kitui sanitary towels distribution held in October 2015 still remains to be one of my most touching moments which left me challenged. The girl child has the right to get education but various factors inhibit their dreams to come true.e.g poverty, lack of support from Government etc. The society really needs more help from Mfariji Africa and others. We have the call to support the society to our very best, let’s do this again and again until the girl child gets the deserved right to education.’
On Thursday 22nd October 2015 our team which comprised of Jeff Kinuthia, Natariana kilonzo, Richard Njoroge and Margaret set out to visit 8 primary schools in 1 day with a purpose of reaching out to 500 girls in Kitui County. This without a doubt was one of the busiest sanitary pads distributions we have done this year. However as usual, the team’s energy was radiant, everyone was all up and ready to interact, engage and learn from these girls in Muthale primary ,Mutulu primary , Yatalani primary ,Mukuo primary ,Mavalo primary ,Kangondi primary,Uvaani primary and Kangii primary.
The incredible support we got from teachers was absolutely amazing! We must indeed give a shout to Mrs kithuka (Headmistress) of Kangondi Primary school-Kitui, she put in amazing work to coordinate 500 Girls from 8 schools. She even went ahead to ask the local church for space since the girls could not fit in any classroom.
As the day progressed and our team got into open discussions with the girls there was a lot of learning and a clear understanding of what the girls endure during menstruation as they fight for an opportunity to stay in school and perform better. We were privileged to also get a surprise visit from Faith Muthoni of Zana Africa (http://www.zanaafrica.org/). ZanaAfrica as a partner has supported our work with in Kind donation of sanitary pads and innerwears enabling us to reach more girls in need. In Faiths own words…I had a privilege to meet these lovely girls in Kitui who have wonderful aspirations, dreams and a great purpose in their lives. They walk miles to get to Kangondi primary school to receive sanitary towels and panties, something that helps them stay in school to achieve their purpose in life.
Indeed, we are proud to be part of the solution in making sure that PERIODS don’t get in the way of a Girls right to Education. Slowly we are creating a generation of leaders and change agents!
Stay tuned for more updates.
